Standing at a towering elevation of 8,167 meters (26,795 feet), Mount Dhaulagiri (Dhaulagiri I) is the seventh-highest mountain in the world and the highest peak located entirely within the national borders of Nepal. Etymologically derived from the ancient Sanskrit words Dhawala (meaning “dazzling, bright, white”) and Giri (meaning “mountain”), Dhaulagiri lives up to its name as the “White Mountain” anchoring the Dhaulagiri Himal range in Gandaki Province.

Dhaulagiri is bounded by the tributaries of the Bheri River to the north and southwest, and by the Myagdi Khola to the southeast. To its east lies the Annapurna massif; between these two giant 8,000-meter peaks flows the Kali Gandaki River, forming the Kali Gandaki Gorge—widely recognized as the deepest gorge on Earth. Before the advent of modern administrative restructuring into seven provinces, Dhaulagiri gave its name to the historic Dhaulagiri Zone, an iconic region renowned for high-altitude trekking, cultural diversity, and wildlife conservation.

Former “Highest Mountain” Status: In 1808, when British surveyors first mapped the peak from the Indian plains, Dhaulagiri was believed to be the highest mountain on Earth. It retained this title for 30 years until Kanchenjunga was surveyed in 1838, followed by Mount Everest in 1856.
First Ascent (1960): Dhaulagiri was first successfully summited on May 13, 1960, by a joint Swiss-Austrian-Nepali expedition led by Max Eiselin, featuring legendary climbers Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, Albin Schelbert, and Sherpa mountaineers Nawang Dorje and Nyima Dorje.
Unrivaled Vertical Relief: Dhaulagiri’s sudden dramatic rise from the surrounding terrain is almost unequaled globally. It rises over 7,000 meters (22,970 ft) above the Kali Gandaki River bed located just 30 km to the southeast.
