The majestic peak Nuptse is situated in the Nepalese Mountains’ Khumbu section of the Mahalangur Himal. It is a component of the Lhotse-Nuptse massif and is situated around two kilometers west-southwest of Mount Everest. Tibetans refer to the western portion of the Lhotse-Nubtse massif as Nuptse, which means “west peak” in their language.

Due to unstable snow that has several hollows and loosely linked snow cornices, the summit of Nuptse is quite hazardous. This prevents climbing but is not strong enough to allow for secure climbing. Seven peaks, with Nubtse I being the highest, top the long, east-west sloping main ridge of Nubtse. On May 16, 1961, Dennis Davis and Sherpa Tashi made the first ascent of Nubtse I. The following day, Chris Bonington, Les Brown, James Swallow, and Pemba Sherpa, all participants in a British expedition headed by Joe Walmsley, made the ascent. The way they traveled up the Nuptse peak is known as the Scott route. Between 1961 and 1996, it was just twice more climbed after that.

The Sherpa villages of Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, and Tengboche Monastery are a few of the other sights to see in the Khumbu region.

Lukla, from Kathmandu followed by trekking, leads to Nuptse. Typically, trekkers take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, where they begin their ascent of Nuptse. Permits and guides are necessary for the trek to Nuptse and can be obtained from trekking organizations in Lukla or Kathmandu. The climb to Nuptse is a technical one, thus it should only be undertaken by skilled climbers with the right gear and instruction.
