Tengboche (also Thyangboche) is a village in Nepal’s Province No. 1’s Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality, which is situated at 3,867 meters (12,687 ft). The largest gompa in the Khumbu region and a significant Buddhist monastery, Tengboche Monastery, is located near the settlement. The building was constructed in 1923. It was devastated by an earthquake in 1934, although it was later reconstructed.

In 1989, there was another fire that completely destroyed it, and this time volunteers and foreign aid were used to rebuild it. Tengboche offers a broad perspective of the Himalayan range, which includes Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku, among other well-known peaks.

Tenzing Norgay was raised in the nearby town of Thani and was once sent to Tengboche Monastery to become a monk. He was the first person to summit Mount Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary.
