Listing Description

Sundarijal, meaning “beautiful water,” is a serene destination located 15 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal. The name reflects its picturesque landscapes and the Bagmati River, which originates here and has been a vital water source for the Kathmandu Valley since the Rana Dynasty. The area is also home to the Sundarimai Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sundarimai.

Established in 1934 with a grant from the British government, the Sundarijal Hydropower Station has an installed capacity of 640 kW and an annual design generation of 4.77 GWh. At the time, it was Nepal’s second-oldest hydropower project.

For hikers, Sundarijal serves as a gateway to the Shivapuri National Park. A popular day hike begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Budhanilkantha, followed by a trek through the park to Sundarijal. This route offers diverse experiences, including visits to the Nagi Gumba Monastery and Tarebhir, a renowned rock-climbing spot. The trail is rich in flora and fauna, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts. The hike typically covers about 18 kilometers and takes 5 to 6 hours to complete.

Alternatively, starting from the Kopan Monastery, hikers can enjoy a 4-5 hour journey through the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, passing through Tarebhir and concluding at Sundarijal. This route is known for its scenic beauty and cultural significance.

Whether you’re interested in hiking, exploring cultural sites, or simply enjoying the natural beauty, Sundarijal offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu.
