Listing Description

Thorong La, also known as Thorung La, is a mountain pass in central Nepal’s Damodar Himal, which is located north of the Annapurna Himal. It is 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level. The mountains that make up Thorong La are Khatung Kang and Yakawa Kang. The pass is situated along a trail that links the Mustang District’s Muktinath temple and the surrounding village of Ranipauwa to the west with the village of Manang in the Manang District to the east. The Annapurna Circuit, a 300 km (190 km) path encircling the Annapurna mountain range, has Thorong La as its highest point. Local tradesmen sometimes utilize the crossing in addition to hikers.

The quickest and safest path for hikers to traverse the divide is from east to west (Manang to Muktinath). It is impossible to travel across Thorong La in one day from Manang to Muktinath. Before attempting to cross the Thorong La Pass, hikers typically spend the first night in Yak Kharka and the second night at either Thorong Phedi, which is located at 4,540 meters (14,895 feet), or at Thorong High Camp, which is located at 4,880 meters (16,010 feet). By selecting this route, you shorten the hike’s mileage and height gain/loss for that day. Between arriving in Manang and making the crossing to Muktinath, hikers are advised to stay five nights, according to the Himalayan Rescue Association post workers there. Trekkers can acclimatize effectively to reduce the risk of acute mountain sickness by staying longer in Manang (AMS).
