Listing Description

Dhap Dam is a stunning location in Nepal’s Bagmati Province, 26 kilometers from Kathmandu. It is a 24 m height by 175 m wide dam that has a maximum water storage capacity of 850,000 m3. It was constructed to boost the Bagmati River’s water flow during the dry season. Dhap Dam offers fresh trekking locations close to Kathmandu and is a great site for hiking. Visitors can do nature hikes, observe wildlife, and experience country life.

The Dhap Dam walk begins in Sundarijal, 14 kilometers from Kathmandu, and proceeds to Mulkharka village, where two trails split off, one heading in the direction of Chisapani and the other in the direction of Haibung. Beautiful mountain views, villages, and rivers may all be found along the hiking track. Visitors can walk to Dhap Dam from Haibung in about 15 minutes. Depending on your pace, the entire trip takes 2 to 4 hours. Chisapani is also accessible from Dhap Dam.

The distance between Prakriti Resort and Dhap Dam is about one kilometer, and it takes 20 minutes to walk there.

The Tamang people live in Mulkharka village, which is famed for its expansive vistas of the Kathmandu valley, lush hill terraces, and scenic location in the heart of Shivapuri National Park. Visitors can see the golden summer fruit, or “Aiselu” in Nepali.

A one-day schedule

Kathmandu – Mulkharka Village – Sundarijal – Dhap Dam

Kathmandu to Sundarijal
Take a bus from Ratnapark to Sundarijal, a 1.5-hour bus ride, early in the morning. Purchase your NRS 100 per person tickets at the Shivapuri National Park entrance.

Sundarijal to Mulkharka
From there, take an off-road trail to reach the deep jungle. All the way to the dam, enjoy the trek through the forest with its rivulets and chirping birds. Arrive in Mulkharka after a 1.5-hour hike to take in the expansive panorama of the Kathmandu valley, the beautiful hill terraces, and the Tamang settlement.

Lunch at Mulkharka and Hike to Haibung
After a leisurely lunch at a neighborhood hotel, continue your 1.5-hour hike into Haibung. Haibung offers a much better view of the valley and the picturesque green hills that surround Kathmandu’s towns.

Haibung to Dhap Dam
From Haibung, it takes 20 to 30 minutes to get to Dhap Dam. Even though the climb from Haibung to Dhap Dam is strenuous and dusty, once you arrive to the dam, your weariness will vanish since it is so beautiful and tranquil.

Sit on the dam’s wall and take a break. Enjoy your lunch, relax, and take some pictures while taking in the gorgeous scenery.

Return Back to Kathmandu
After a few hours, begin the quick and simple descent back to your house.

Please pack enough food and drink since there are no food or water facilities on the trek. Don casual attire and hiking-friendly footwear. Take a first aid kit, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses with you in a backpack. Avoid littering and show respect for the local environment and culture.
