Poon Hill, located in the Annapurna Region, is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Nepal. The trek offers stunning views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare mountain ranges. It is especially famous for its sunrise view over the Himalayas. If you’re looking for a relatively short and rewarding trek, Poon Hill is the perfect choice.

How to Reach Poon Hill from Kathmandu

To start your journey, you need to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Pokhara is the gateway for most treks in the Annapurna region, including Poon Hill.

Itinerary from Kathmandu to Poon Hill

Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara
The first day begins with a 6-7 hour drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Alternatively, you can take a 30-minute flight for quicker travel. Once in Pokhara, take a short walk around Phewa Lake or visit the World Peace Pagoda for panoramic views.

Day 2: Pokhara to Tikhedhunga / Ulleri
After breakfast in Pokhara, drive to Nayapul (1.5 hours). Then start the trek to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri, a small village at the foot of the Annapurna Range. The trek takes 4-5 hours, passing through forests and waterfalls.

Day 3: Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani
On this day, trek to Ghorepani (2,850m). The route is steep but offers amazing views of Machapuchare (Fish Tail). It takes about 6-7 hours to reach Ghorepani.

Wake up early to trek to Poon Hill (3,210m) for the famous sunrise view. It takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top. Enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare, and other peaks as the sun rises. Afterward, trek back to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue to Tadapani (2,630m). This part of the trek takes about 4-5 hours.

On the final day, descend from Tadapani to Nayapul (5-6 hours). From there, drive back to Pokhara. Relax and explore the city before returning to Kathmandu.

Best Time to Visit Poon Hill

The best time for the Poon Hill trek is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). The weather is clear, and the skies are mostly sunny. During these seasons, you can enjoy excellent views of the mountains. Winter (December to February) is cold, but if you like snow-covered landscapes, it’s still a great option. The monsoon season (June to August) is not ideal due to heavy rain, which can make trails slippery and difficult.
