Listing Description

On the boundary between Nepal and Tibet, in the Mahalangur region of the Himalayas, is the magnificent mountain range known as Pumori. It is known as “Everest’s Daughter” and is located only eight kilometers to the west of the famous Mount Everest. Pumori, which in Sherpa language means “the Mountain Daughter,” is the name George Mallory gave to the mountain, which is 7,161 meters (23,494 ft) above sea level. In Sherpa, “Pumo” signifies a young girl or daughter and “Ri” indicates mountain. Clare Peak was also given by Mallory in honor of his daughter.

Climbers love Pumori because it presents a great challenge for both beginning and expert climbers. Class 3 is the simplest route to Pumori, although climbers should be aware of substantial avalanche danger. On May 17, 1962, Gerhard Lenser of a German-Swiss team made the first ascent of Pumori. Two Czech climbers, Leopold Sulovsk and Zdenk Michalec, established a brand-new route up the mountain’s south face in the spring of 1996.

Trekkers often fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, then hike to the Everest Base Camp to reach Pumori. The route passes through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, three charming Sherpa settlements. Trekkers ascend to Pumori Base Camp from Dingboche, where they may take in breathtaking vistas.

Pumori is a key cultural location in addition to being a well-liked climbing and trekking destination. The Sherpa people, who have a long history of mountaineering and a rich culture, reside in this area. The region is filled with stupas and monasteries that showcase the distinctive Sherpa culture. One of the oldest monasteries in the area, Tengboche Monastery, offers trekkers breath-taking vistas of the Everest range. The monastery is the site of the revered Mani Rimdu Festival, a pivotal Sherpa cultural occasion that takes place every year around the full moon in October or November.

Nepal Tourism Hub recommends Pumori as a stunning peak in Nepal’s Everest region that presents both climbers and trekkers with a formidable challenge. The region is even more alluring due to the Sherpa culture and strong climbing heritage, making it a must-visit location for those seeking adventure and those curious to learn more about the Sherpa way of life.
