General Information

Fertile Agricultural Heartland & Historic Gateway of Lower Khumbu

Nestled at an elevation of approximately 2,680 meters (8,792 feet) on a scenic alpine shelf just beneath Lukla in Solukhumbu District, Koshi Province, Chauri Kharka (officially integrated into Ward No. 1 & 2 of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality) is one of the oldest and most agriculturally vital Sherpa settlements in the Everest region. Known historically as the breadbasket of the Khumbu, Chauri Kharka—which translates to “Pasture of the Chauri” (yak-cow hybrid)—combines fertile terraced farmland, ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional stone architecture, and classic trekking trails that connect Jiri and Salleri to the upper Himalayas.

Quick Facts and Key Information

Agricultural Engine & Pre-Aviation Heritage

Long before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s historic 1953 Everest ascent and the subsequent construction of Lukla Airport in 1964, Chauri Kharka was the principal administrative and agricultural hub of the lower Khumbu valley. Because of its milder climate and sheltered location lower in the valley floor, Chauri Kharka possesses fertile soil where local Sherpa families cultivate organic potatoes, barley, buckwheat, cabbage, and apples.

The village remains a vital stop along the classic overland pioneer route. Trekkers opting to hike into the Khumbu from Jiri, Shivalaya, or Salleri pass directly through the quiet, stone-walled hamlets of Chauri Kharka before joining the main Dudh Koshi river trail toward Phakding and Namche Bazaar.
