General Information

Staging Hub for Island Peak & Three Passes Trek

Perched at an elevation of 4,730 meters (15,518 feet) along a left fork of the Imja Khola River, Chhukung (also spelled Chukhung) is a high-altitude lodge village in the upper Imja Valley of Solukhumbu District, Koshi Province. Located inside Sagarmatha National Park south of Mount Everest, Chhukung evolved from a traditional seasonal yak pasture into a world-famous mountaineering hub. Encircling glacial basins formed by the massive walls of Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cho Polu, and Baruntse, Chhukung serves as the primary base camp staging post for climbing Island Peak (Imja Tse) and crossing the high Kongma La Pass along the Three Passes Trek.

Prominent Local Viewpoint Chhukung Ri (5,550 meters / 18,209 feet)

Valley Topography & Evolution from Pastoral Pasture

The Chhukung Valley occupies an extraordinary glacial amphitheater in the high Khumbu. To the north rise the colossal southern faces of Lhotse (8,516m) and Nuptse (7,861m) fed by the Lho and Nup Glaciers. To the east, the Imja Glacier flows past the flanks of Cho Polu and Baruntse, while the northern slopes of Ama Dablam (6,812m) drop into the valley via the Ama Dablam and Chhukung Glaciers.

Historically, Chhukung had no permanent year-round residents and was used strictly by Sherpa herders from Dingboche as a seasonal summer grazing ground (Kharka) for yaks. As Island Peak (Imja Tse) exploded in popularity as Nepal’s most climbed 6,000-meter trekking peak, local Sherpa entrepreneurs built seasonal high-altitude teahouses and lodges, transforming Chhukung into a vital acclimatization stopover and gear rental station.

Major Highlights and Local Experiences

Chhukung Ri Ascent (5,550m)

Travel Tips – Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Use Chhukung (4,730m) as a dedicated acclimatization hub for ascending Chhukung Ri (5,550m) before tackling Island Peak or high passes.
  • Inspect and rent technical climbing gear (crampons, plastic boots, harness, ascender) from local certified shops in Chhukung.
  • Stay hydrated with hot soups and herbal teas, as cold wind gusts flow continuously down from the surrounding glaciers.
  • Carry cash (NPR), as ATM facilities are unavailable above Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.
Don’ts

  • Do not attempt to cross Kongma La Pass (5,535m) in severe weather or without early morning starts and proper navigation tools.
  • Do not ignore symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS); descend toward Dingboche (4,410m) if severe headache or nausea persists.
  • Do not litter battery waste, plastic packaging, or food wrappers along glacier moraines or riverbeds.

Routes and Transportation Options

Trekking Route via Lukla & Dingboche: Fly from Kathmandu or Manthali (Ramechhap) to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,860m). Trek through Namche Bazaar (3,440m), Tengboche (3,867m), and Dingboche (4,410m). From Dingboche, follow the left fork of the Imja Khola River trail eastward to arrive in Chhukung in approximately 2 hours of gradual uphill walking.

Connecting Route from Lobuche: Trekkers completing the Three Passes Trek cross over Kongma La Pass (5,535m) from Lobuche to descend directly into Chhukung village.

Spectacular high valley settlement before Island Peak and Kongma La pass. The close vistas of Lhotse and Ama Dablam from the lodge terraces are remarkable.
