Listing Description

Between the Kaligandaki River in the west and the Bheri, the Dhaulagiri massif in Nepal stretches over 120 kilometres (70 mi). The Myagdi Khola and tributaries of the Bheri River border this massif on its southeast and north and southwest, respectively. At 8,167 meters (26,795 feet) above sea level, Dhaulagiri I is the seventh-highest mountain in the world and the tallest mountain that is entirely contained inside one nation (Nepal). A Swiss, Austrian, and Nepali team made the first ascent of it on May 13, 1960.

The mountain’s name is धौलागिरी (dhaulāgirī) in Nepali. This comes from Sanskrit where धवल (dhawala) means dazzling, white, beautiful  and गिरि (giri) means mountain. Dhaulagiri I is also the highest point of the Gandaki river basin.

34 kilometers (21 miles) east of Dhaulagiri is Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545 ft). In the Kaligandaki Gorge, which is thought to be the deepest in the world, the Kali Gandaki River flows between the two. The town of Pokhara, which sits south of the Annapurnas and serves as both a gateway for climbers and trekkers visiting both mountain ranges as well as a popular tourist attraction in and of itself, is a significant regional hub.
