Historical Cross-Border Trade & Electoral Significance

Panchayat Era Trade Corridor: Historically, during the Rana and Panchayat eras before modern national highways were constructed, Gauradaha served as a crucial commercial trade route into northern West Bengal and Bihar in India. Traders and local porters used informal border trails passing through Gauradaha, Kohabara, and Gaurigunj to exchange Nepalese grains, mustard, and timber for essential commodities like salt, textiles, and kerosene from Indian border markets.

Jhapa-5 Political Landscape: Gauradaha forms an integral geographic block of the high-profile Jhapa-5 parliamentary constituency. The municipality is said to have played a pivotal role during national parliamentary elections, serving as a primary campaign battleground during Balen Shah’s high-visibility electoral campaign against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Jhapa-5.
