General Information

The Main Crossroads Junction of Eastern Nepal

Strategically located at the vital intersection of the East-West Mahendra Highway and the North-South Koshi Highway in the Sunsari District of Koshi Province (Province No. 1), Itahari (ईटहरी) is one of eastern Nepal’s most dynamic sub-metropolitan cities. Spanning 93.78 square kilometers across 20 wards, Itahari was established as a municipality in 1997 and elevated to a sub-metropolitan city in 2014 by merging the adjoining VDCs of Khanar, Ekamba, Pakali, and Hansposa. Today, it operates as the ultimate transport crossroads and routing gateway connecting the eastern Terai plains to the northern Himalayan hill corridors.

The Ultimate Eastern Transport & Economic Routing Hub

Itahari’s geographical positioning makes it an indispensable waypoint for any journey across Eastern Nepal. Its central landmark—Itahari Chowk—functions as a massive transit interchange where travelers heading east toward Jhapa and Ilam, west toward Kathmandu and Pokhara, south toward the industrial border hub of Biratnagar, or north toward the cool hill stations of Dharan and Bhedetar converge.

Beyond its transit importance, the city has evolved into a thriving commercial powerhouse featuring modern shopping complexes, family amusement parks (such as Ocean Park and local recreation resorts like Gokulam Resort in Sundar Dulari), eco-tourism community forests like Shantiban (and the scenic Betana Wetland nearby), and a wide selection of star-standard hotels.
