Listing Description

The birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, and a revered Buddhist pilgrimage destination, Lumbini is situated in the Rupandehi District of Province No. 5 in Nepal. According to Buddhist legend, Siddhartha Gautama was born at Lumbini in 563 BCE to Queen Mahamayadevi. Millions of Buddhists worship the location, which is regarded as one of the most significant in the Buddhist faith.

There are a number of temples at Lumbini, one of which is the Mayadevi Temple, which was constructed on the site where Queen Mahamayadevi is thought to have given birth to Gautam Buddha. One of the most popular destinations in Lumbini is the temple, which features old architecture. Moreover, a number of brand-new temples in Lumbini have been constructed with funding from international Buddhist groups. Moreover, the holy site contains a number of monuments, monasteries, and a museum.

The Puskarini, or Holy Pond, is one of Lumbini’s most important locations. Tradition has it that before the birth of Gautam Buddha, his mother had a ceremonial bath in this pond. Gautam Buddha also took his first bath in this pond.

Together with the holy site, there are numerous other important Buddhist sites close to Lumbini, including the birthplaces of Gautam Buddha’s mother and father, Devadaha and Kapilavastu.

The location’s historical importance makes it important as well. It is thought that a pillar found in Rupandehi in 1896 marks the location of Ashoka’s visit to Lumbini. Until the pillar was found, no one knew the location as Lumbini. The park, located two miles north of Bhagavanpura, was formerly known as Rupandehi.

Because of Lumbini’s importance to culture and history, UNESCO designated the city as a World Heritage Site in 1997. As a representation of Buddhism’s historical roots and of the religion’s message of peace and harmony, Lumbini must be preserved in order to advance global peace and knowledge of Buddhism.

How to get to Lumbini from Kathmandu?

The fastest and most practical means of transportation from Kathmandu to Lumbini is by plane or by road. These are your choices:

  1. Via Air: Bhairahawa, which is roughly 22 kilometers from Lumbini, is home to the Gautam Buddha Airport, which serves Lumbini. Between Kathmandu and Bhairahawa, daily flights are run by a number of domestic carriers, including Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Shree Airlines. It takes about 45 minutes to fly.
  2. Via Road: The drive from Kathmandu to Lumbini is approximately 306 kilometres, and it takes 8 to 10 hours to get there. Between Kathmandu and Lumbini, public buses and common tourist buses run often. Due to the state of the roads, the bus trip can be a little uncomfortable, but it is still a convenient and affordable option. As an alternative, you can use a cab or private car, which is more commodious and practical.

Generally, taking a flight is the most convenient and comfortable alternative, while taking a bus or taxi is preferable for tourists on a budget who wish to take in the gorgeous sights of Nepal’s countryside.
