Licchavi History & Legend of the Divine Idol

The history of Palanchowk Bhagwati dates back to the Licchavi dynasty during the reign of King Mānadeva. According to regional folklore and historical chronicles, the miraculous black stone image was crafted by a master sculptor under strict tantric rituals. The idol depicts the goddess with multiple arms slaying the demon Mahisasura. Legend holds that when the royal entourage attempted to transport the completed masterpiece northwards, the idol mysteriously grew too heavy to lift at the present hilltop site, signaling the Goddess’s divine wish to reside permanently in Palanchowk.

Palanchowk Bhagwati is historically linked as the “elder sister” to other famed deities in the Kathmandu Valley, including Naxal Bhagwati and Sobha Bhagawati. Throughout the centuries, the shrine has remained an epicenter of deep religious devotion, attracting monarchs, traders, and everyday pilgrims seeking divine intervention and protection from misfortune.
