The Pathibhara Temple, also known as Mukkumlung, is a revered location for Hindu and Limbu pilgrims and is located on a hill close to Taplejung, Nepal. The temple is one of the most sacred places to the Limbu people, who make up a sizable portion of the local population. On significant occasions, worshippers come to this temple from different parts of India and Nepal since it is renowned for granting pilgrims’ wishes.

The temple is situated 19.4 kilometers northeast of the Phungling municipality at a height of 3,794 meters (12,444.32 feet) above sea level. It serves as a secondary route for the Kanchenjunga trek, one of the most popular hiking routes in Nepal. Due to this, both hikers and spiritual pilgrims like visiting there as a vacation destination.

The previous Royal family of Nepal is one of the many worshipers who present the goddess with animal sacrifices, gold, and silver. The practice of giving sacrifices within the temple is supposed to have started when shepherds lost hundreds of their sheep while grazing close to where the temple now stands. In a dream, the goddess instructed the anxious shepherds to offer a ritualistic sacrifice of sheep and build a temple in her honor. After the sacrifice was offered, the vanished herd reappeared.

Legend has it that the goddess Pathibhara is endowed with extraordinary powers and hears the pleas of her devotees with great attention. Her devotees, who also refer to her by many other celestial names such as Chandi, Kali, Maha Maya, and Maha Rudri, consider her to be a manifestation of the goddess Durga. Legend has it that the goddess is a strong deity that is easily placated by simple deeds of selflessness like prayer and sacrifice. She is severe and unforgiving to those who wish her harm, though.

The temple represents the harmony of religion and culture in Nepal. After the Gorkha (Khas) invasion of Limbuwan, the sacred temple of the Limbu people (Manghim in Limbu language) was absorbed into mainstream Hinduism and is now recognized as one of the Hindu Shaktipeeths without changing the prior beliefs or practices of the Limbu people. This temple represents the blending of the Limbu and Hindu cultures because of the devotion with which both tribes adore the deity.

The temple, which is perched atop a hill, provides a stunning view of the mountains, valleys, and forests that surround it. Although there isn’t a direct flight or road from Kathmandu to Taplejung, one can nonetheless get there by doing what is described below:

Via Air: The Suketar Airport, which is about 30 minutes’ drive from the Pathibhara Temple, is the closest airport to Taplejung. One can take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and then a connecting flight to Suketar Airport to get there. The trip takes between 1.5 and 2 hours in total.
By Road: Traveling by road is an additional choice. The primary hub of the eastern region, Birtamod, is reachable from Kathmandu by bus or vehicle. The main town of the Taplejung district is Taplejung Bazar, which can be reached from there by local bus or jeep. To go the 19 kilometers to the Pathibhara Temple from Taplejung Bazaar, take a taxi or a vehicle.
Trekking: From Suketar or Taplejung Bazar, you can hike to the Pathibhara Temple. Depending on the path used, the journey takes from 4-5 hours from Suketar and 6-7 hours from Taplejung Bazar. Although the journey is difficult and somewhat difficult, it offers a stunning perspective of the Himalayan mountains.

Tourists can explore the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, the Limbu Culture Museum, and the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale Himalayan Range in addition to the Pathibhara Temple while they are in the area.
