Crown of Upper Manang

Located in the upper Marshyangdi River valley within Manang District (Gandaki Province), Pisang (पिसाङ) is one of the most scenic and culturally rich mountain settlements along the world-famous Annapurna Circuit. Divided into Lower Pisang (3,185 m) along the river and Upper Pisang (3,310 m) on the high ridge, the village sits directly below the sharp peak of Pisang Peak (6,091 m), faces the north face of Annapurna II (7,937 m), and lies just west of the massive rock wall known as Paungda Danda (Swarga Dwar / Gateway to Heaven).

Mountain Views, Upper vs. Lower Pisang & Local Culture

Pisang marks a major change in landscape along the Annapurna Circuit. As you leave the green rhododendron and pine forests of Chame behind, the landscape shifts into the dry, high-altitude alpine terrain of Upper Manang. Right before arriving in Pisang, you will see Paungda Danda, a massive 1,700-meter-high curved rock wall of smooth slate. Locals call this rock Swarga Dwar (Gateway to Heaven) and believe spirits of the deceased ascend this rock face to reach heaven.

Pisang is split into two distinct settlements:

Lower Pisang (3,185 m): Located right along the river valley floor with easier road access, several cozy teahouses, a safe drinking water station, and flat walking paths.
Upper Pisang (3,310 m): Perched on the hillside across a suspension bridge. It features traditional stone houses, wood-stacked roofs, and the historic Upper Pisang Monastery, which offers a dramatic view of Annapurna II and IV.

Staying in Upper Pisang or hiking the higher ridge trail toward Ghyaru and Ngawal provides better acclimatization before crossing the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416 m).

Do’s

Take the short walk up to Upper Pisang Monastery in the afternoon for peaceful sunset views over Annapurna II.
Choose the high route via Ghyaru and Ngawal to Manang if you want better acclimatization and dramatic mountain views.
Walk clockwise around all Mani walls, Chortens, and Buddhist shrines.
Drink plenty of warm fluids (water, tea, soup) to help your body adapt to the 3,200m+ elevation.

Don’ts

Respect Sacred Sites: Climbing the sacred Paungda Danda (Swarga Dwar) rock face is strictly forbidden due to local spiritual beliefs.
Do not take photographs inside monastery prayer halls without asking the resident monks for permission.
Do not leave non-biodegradable trash behind; use designated disposal points in the villages.
Avoid rushing your pace uphill; ascend slowly to avoid altitude sickness.

How to Reach Pisang (Routes & Access)

Trek from Chame: Most hikers walk from Chame (2,670 m) to Pisang (3,200 m). The hike covers roughly 14 km, passing through pine forests, Bhratang apple orchards, and under the dramatic Paungda Danda rock face (takes about 4.5 to 6 hours).

4WD Jeep Road Access: A rough mountain dirt road runs from Besisahar through Chame directly to Lower Pisang and onward to Manang. 4WD jeeps operate regularly during dry seasons, making it possible to drive from Besisahar in 6 to 8 hours.
