Listing Description

Rani Mahal, also known as the Queen’s Palace, is a historical palace located in the district of Palpa, Nepal. The palace is situated on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River which is a unique example of the blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. It also has a unique history that adds to its charm. It was constructed in 1893 by General Khadga Samsher Rana JBR as a tribute to his beloved youngest wife, Tej Kumari Devi, who passed away a year prior. The palace’s name, Rani Mahal, means “Queens Palace,” and the nearby forest and Ghats were also named after her. Unfortunately, in 1902, General Khadga Samsher Rana and his family had to flee to India, abandoning the palace, which led to years of neglect and structural deterioration. However, recent restoration efforts have brought Rani Mahal back to its former glory, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in Nepal’s rich history and architectural wonders.

The palace has a unique structure with a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers. The interior of the palace is adorned with beautiful artwork, frescoes, and intricate carvings. The palace’s location on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and the river.

Rani Mahal is an ideal destination for history and architecture enthusiasts. It offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the Rana era in Nepal. The palace has been recently restored and is open to visitors. The best time to visit Rani Mahal is from September to December when the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear. Also, many love birds visit this historic place more during Valentine’s Day.

To get to Rani Mahal from Kathmandu, you can take a direct bus to Tansen, which is the district headquarters of Palpa. From Tansen, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to Rani Mahal, which is located about 12 km from Tansen.
