General Information

Gateway to Humla & Holy Mount Kailash

Perched at an elevation of 2,910 meters (9,547 feet) on a high cliff ridge in northwestern Nepal, Simikot is the administrative headquarters of Humla District in Karnali Province. As one of Nepal’s most remote mountain outposts, Simikot serves as the primary gateway for pilgrimage treks toward Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, as well as wilderness routes through the pristine Limi Valley. Overlooking the deep gorge of the Humla Karnali River, Simikot offers travelers a rare, raw glimpse into trans-Himalayan trade, indigenous Khas and Tibetan Buddhist cultures, and rugged alpine landscapes.

Quick Facts and Key Information

Location Simikot Rural Municipality, Humla District, Karnali Province
Official Elevation 2,910 meters (9,547 feet) above sea level
Primary Air Access Simikot Airport (STOL Airstrip – 549m runway)
Border Connectivity 51 km to Hilsa (Tibet Autonomous Region border)
Key Function Gateway to Mount Kailash, Limi Valley & Great Himalaya Trail
Local Media Stations Radio Karnali Aawaz (94.2 MHz) & Radio Kailash (103.4 MHz)

Remote Geography, Transportation & Culture

Simikot’s unique location makes it one of the last true wilderness frontiers in Nepal. Because southern national highway networks have historically ended near Jumla (86 km southeast), direct transit to Simikot from Nepal’s urban centers relies heavily on short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft—such as Twin Otters and Dornier planes—operating out of Nepalgunj Airport.

To the northwest, a mountain dirt road connects Simikot with the Tibetan border post at Hilsa (51 km), facilitating cross-border trade and pilgrimage traffic. Culturally, Simikot bridges the Hindu Khas traditions of lower Karnali valleys with the ancient Tibetan Buddhist heritage of the Nyinba and Limi communities in upper Humla. Local communication and news are actively supported by community stations, including Radio Karnali Aawaz and Radio Kailash.

Major Highlights and Trekking Experiences

Travel Tips – Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Plan buffer days in your travel itinerary, as flights between Nepalgunj and Simikot are highly weather-dependent.
  • Obtain required Humla Restricted Area Permits and TIMS cards before departing for treks beyond Simikot.
  • Carry sufficient cash (NPR), as ATM availability is limited and digital banking can be unreliable in remote zones.
  • Respect local Buddhist and Khas cultural customs when visiting monasteries and local village homes.
Don’ts

  • Do not attempt solo wilderness trekking past Simikot into restricted border zones without a licensed guide.
  • Do not cross the border at Hilsa into Tibet without formal group visa clearances and permits.
  • Do not litter plastic packaging or battery waste along fragile high-altitude Karnali river trails.

Routes and Transportation Options

By Air (Primary Route): Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj Airport (approx. 50 minutes). From Nepalgunj, take an early morning STOL flight (Dornier or Twin Otter) to Simikot Airport (2,910m, approx. 45 to 50 minutes).

Overland & Trekking Routes: From Simikot, trekkers head northwest along the Humla Karnali trail through Dharapori, Kermi, and Yalbang toward Hilsa (51 km). Rough dirt roads connect Hilsa across the Tibetan border to Purang (Taklakot).
