General Information

Sacred Fish Goddess Sanctuary

Nestled amidst the lush forested foothills and river basin of Tanahun District in Gandaki Province, Chhabdi Barahi Temple (छाब्दी वाराही मन्दिर) is one of western Nepal’s most revered Shakti shrines. Located at the headwaters of the sacred Chhabdi Khola—approximately 7 to 10 km east of the district headquarters, Damauli (Vyas Municipality)—the sanctuary is dedicated to Goddess Barahi, revered in local mythology as a virgin fish-manifested deity (Matsya-Avatar). Encircled by natural springs, sacred fish ponds, scenic waterfalls, and rolling greenery, it serves as a central spiritual pillar connecting the pilgrimage heritage of Vyas Cave, Dhor Barahi, and Pokhara.

Mythological Roots, Sacred Fish Legends & Royal History

According to scriptural lore documented in the Shrimad Devi Bhagavata, Sage Rishi Vedvyas performed rigorous meditation at the confluence of the Madi and Seti rivers (Damauli) and worshipped Goddess Jaladevi at this tranquil spring source in reverence of his mother, Satyavati (Matsyagandha). Pleased by his austerity, the Goddess manifested in the sacred waters in the form of a golden-scaled fish. To this day, the perennial pond (Kunda) beside the temple teems with sacred Himalayan carp that devotees feed but never catch or harm.

Another widespread historical legend recounts that during ancient times, local hunters struck an arrow into a submerged rock while fishing in the stream, only for milk and blood to miraculously spurt from the stone. Recognizing divine presence, local communities consecrated the rock and founded the shrine. Historically connected to the Sen and Tanahun dynasties and renovated under royal decrees (including major preservation in B.S. 2015), Chhabdi Barahi and the nearby Dhor Barahi shrine in Shuklagandaki are revered as divine sister goddesses.

Beyond religious worship, the wide-open flatlands (Chhabdi Faat), natural forest canopy, and cascading freshwater waterfall behind the temple complex have made the area one of Tanahun’s most popular day-trip, cultural hiking, and family picnic destinations.
