Revered for housing a rare five-faced Shiva lingam (Panchamukhi Shivalinga), the temple holds dual significance as a blessed abode where Lord Shiva grants prosperity (Dhana) and as a sacred Shakti Peeth where Sati Devi’s right ear is believed to have fallen.

Puranic Origins & Mythological Legends

According to the sacred texts of the Himavathkhanda Purana, there once lived a poor merchant of the Vaishya community named Shiva Das. Facing continuous mockery and social isolation from his wealthy relatives due to extreme poverty, Shiva Das renounced material life and became a wandering hermit in the hills of Kavre. Guided by the wise sage Ritu, he initiated intense penance and prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva under the name of Dhaneshwor (the Lord of Prosperity).

Pleased by his unyielding devotion, Lord Shiva blessed Shiva Das with immense wealth and property. In eternal gratitude to his divine benefactor, Shiva Das established this temple complex to commemorate the grace of Dhaneshwor Mahadev.

In broader Shakti traditions, this sacred spot is revered as one of the holy Shakti Peeths. It is believed that while Lord Shiva wandered the cosmos in deep grief carrying the deceased body of Sati Devi, her right ear fell at this exact location, blessing the soil with protective feminine cosmic energy.

Temple Complex, Art & Sacred Idols

The main shrine is a multi-roofed Nepalese pagoda temple enclosed by stone courtyards and forested hill slopes. The chief object of devotion inside the sanctum sanctorum is the famous Panchamukhi Shivalinga (Five-Faced Shiva Lingam), considered one of the finest and most sacred stone lingas in Nepal.

Surrounding the main sanctum are several meticulously carved stone sculptures representing the broader Hindu pantheon, including Bhairav, Lord Narayan, Laxminarayan, Hanuman, Mahankal, Umamaheshwor, and a seated brass/stone effigy of Lord Shiva’s divine vehicle, Nandi.
