Spanning the lower foothills of the Siwalik range along the East-West Highway in Kailali District of Sudurpashchim Province, Ghodaghodi Lake Complex is one of Nepal’s premier freshwater wetland ecosystems. Designated as a globally protected Ramsar Site in August 2003 and declared Nepal’s First Bird Sanctuary in March 2022, this interconnected network of around 13 to 24 large and small natural oxbow lakes and wetlands provides a vital sanctuary for endangered biodiversity, migratory avifauna, and indigenous Tharu spiritual traditions.

For the indigenous Tharu community native to the Kailali Terai, Ghodaghodi is deeply sacred.
