History of Kichak Badh & Connection to the Mahabharata

According to the Virata Parva of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, after spending twelve years in the forest, the Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi spent their thirteenth year of mandatory exile in disguise (Agyatavas) at the court of King Virata in the Matsya Kingdom. During this time, Draupadi assumed the identity of Sairandhri (a maidservant to Queen Sudeshna), while Bhima disguised himself as the palace cook, Vallabha.

Kichaka, the powerful commander-in-chief of King Virata’s army and brother to Queen Sudeshna, became infatuated with Draupadi and harassed her despite her protests. Unable to tolerate the insult, Draupadi sought help from Bhima. In a secret night encounter near the palace, Bhima fought Kichaka and slew him, protecting Draupadi’s honor and keeping their identities hidden. The site where this event occurred came to be known locally as Kichak Badh (meaning “The Slaying of Kichaka”).

Today, a central shrine and pond complex at the site features life-sized statues depicting the mighty Bhima wrestling and defeating Kichaka, serving as a primary focal point for Hindu pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
