Perched atop a hill west of Kathmandu city, Swoyambhunath Stupa (also spelled Swayambhunath) is an ancient religious complex that serves as one of Nepal’s most recognizable UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Historical Legend and Origin

Dating back to the Licchavi period around the 5th century CE, Swoyambhunath is one of the oldest recorded religious structures in Nepal. According to mythological tradition, the entire Kathmandu Valley was once a vast primordial lake. A lotus blossomed in the center of the waters, radiating self-existent divine light.

When the Bodhisattva Manjushri drained the lake by cutting a gorge at Chobhar, the hill holding the self-sprung lotus transformed into Swoyambhu. Tibetan Buddhists refer to the hill as Shing.kun (“Sublime Trees”), referring to the forests surrounding the hilltop shrine.

The Golden Vajra (Thunderbolt)

Positioned at the top of the eastern stone staircase rests a large brass-plated Vajra set on a bronze Dharmadhatu mandala. It symbolizes the indestructible nature of enlightenment and truth in Vajrayana Buddhism.

Harati Devi Temple

Adjoining the Buddhist stupa is a two-tiered Newar pagoda dedicated to Harati Mata, the protector of children and goddess of smallpox, demonstrating the harmonious co-existence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions in Newar culture.

The 365 Eastern Steps

The steep stone stairway ascending the eastern face of the hill contains 365 individual steps. Lined with stone sculptures of animals and deities, the climb offers an authentic pilgrim entrance to the hilltop platform.

From Thamel / Central Kathmandu: Taxis and ride-hailing services take about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the base of Swoyambhu. Local microbuses depart regularly from Ratna Park, Shahid Gate, or Kalanki towards Swoyambhu Chowk.

Entry Routes: Travelers can climb the 365 eastern steps for the classic walk or use the vehicle-accessible southern/western road leading up to the top parking area for direct access.

Note: Dedicated tourist shuttle services do not operate to the hill. Visitors utilize public microbuses, taxis, or private rentals.
