Local Life, Holy Temples & Culture in Dharan

Dharan is known across Nepal for its modern fashion, clean streets, music culture, and British Gurkha military heritage. At the same time, it is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers in the country, drawing thousands of devotees to its holy shrines on the Bijayapur hill:

  • Budhasubba Temple: A world-famous temple known for unique bamboo trees without tops (टुप्पो नभएको बाँस). Devotees tie sacred threads here to pray for love, good luck, and success.
  • Dantakali Temple: A holy Shakti Peetha where Goddess Sati’s tooth (Danta) is believed to have fallen in ancient Hindu history.
  • Pindeshwor Dham: An ancient Shiva shrine with a continuously burning holy oil lamp. During the month of Shrawan (Bolbam), pilgrims carry holy river water from Barahakshetra to offer prayers here.
  • Panchakanya Temple: A quiet forest temple on the Bijayapur hill dedicated to five divine maiden goddesses.

At the center of town around Bhanu Chowk, you can climb the tall Dharan Clock Tower (Ghantaghar) to see the whole city and the flat plains below. Dharan is also famous for tasty local foods, bakeries, clothing markets, and friendly cafes.

Shram Sanskriti Park & Harka Sampang’s Voluntary Labour Movement

In recent years, Dharan has become widely popular across Nepal and abroad through the leadership of independent Mayor Harka Raj Rai (Harka Sampang). Known for his grassroots community campaign and dedication to public service, Harka Sampang inspired a nationwide culture of voluntary public labour (Shramdaan), mobilizing thousands of citizens to build drinking water pipelines from distant rivers to resolve the city’s long-standing water shortage.

A major outcome of this community movement is Shram Sanskriti Park (श्रम संस्कृति पार्क), located along the Sardu river watershed in Dharan-13/20. Built almost entirely through voluntary public contributions, tree planting, and citizen labor, this green park has quickly become a top tourist attraction in eastern Nepal. Visitors from across the country travel here to see the flower gardens, walking paths, stone artwork, and community water projects that symbolize self-reliance and civic pride.
