Padukasthan is an important religious site located in the Dullu Municipality of Dailekh District, Karnali Province. It is one of the five holy places of Dailekh, known as Panchkoshi, which means the five sacred spots. Padukasthan is a place of great significance for Hindus and people who follow other religions in the region.

The Mythological Story

The name “Padukasthan” comes from the word “Paduka,” meaning feet, and “Sthan,” meaning place. According to local mythology, the site is named after the decayed feet of Sati Devi, the wife of Lord Shiva. It is said that after her death, her feet were placed here, and this place became holy. Because of this, Padukasthan holds a special place in the hearts of religious followers.

There is also another belief about the place. It is said that the inscription of the feet of Lord Vishnu was found here. This is why the site is also known as Bishnu Padukasthan. It is a place where different stories and legends from Hindu mythology come together.

Historical and Religious Significance

In ancient times, Padukasthan was known by several names, including Shirsthan and Nabhisthan. These names are linked to certain flames that existed on the water. At present, there is a flame house located in the area, where a fire continues to burn. However, in 2028 BS, a flood destroyed the Paduka Bridge, which damaged the flame. Despite this, the place is still a center of spiritual activity.

Many people believe that Padukasthan has a source of kerosene, which explains the continuous fire. This belief was supported by Yogi Naraharinath, who mentioned in his studies that there were more than 108 values connected to this holy site.

Temples and Structures

The temple area at Padukasthan is full of ancient and sacred statues. There are temples dedicated to various gods and goddesses like Lord Shiva, Bhairav, Gorakhnath, Buddha, Jain, Lakshminarayan, Ganesha, and Machindranath. However, many of these temples and statues have been damaged and remain unfulfilled. Some ruins still stand as reminders of the past.

One of the most interesting parts of the site is the auto flame in the flame house, which burns without any external source of fuel. It is a mysterious and spiritual phenomenon that attracts many visitors.

The Historical Ruins

Padukasthan is also a place where many ancient inscriptions can be found. There are stone inscriptions dating back to the Shak Sambat 1136 and 1162, which offer insights into the history of the area. The ruins of the Deval Pillars, built by the Khas king Sawn Karki Sauka Kakaryani, are also found here. These ruins reflect the rich history of the Khas Empire.

Besides the temples and ruins, Padukasthan also has a worn hospice nearby, which was once used for religious purposes. There is a tree of Rudraksha beads, which is considered very sacred. The place is quiet and peaceful, making it a perfect spot for those interested in spirituality, history, and ancient culture.
